Kumite, or "sparring", is the free-style application of the techniques found in both Basics, and Kata. Sparring with a live opponent, or partner, has the added advantage of helping to develop quick reflexes, physical stamina, and crucially, employing all of the senses in a rapidly-moving engagement. More importantly, the consistent practice of sparring helps to cultivate inner calm and relaxation. One learns to sideline one's emotion in service of more effective and targeted techniques, as well as improved, consistent, and controlled breathing. The long term effect of proper development all of these physical and mental disciplines can mean the difference between danger and safety in a bona fide self-defense situation. Sparring in the dojo will always begin and end with a bow, a sign of respect, to one's sparring partner.
